Contributing to WordPress Core – It’s Time to Give Back

I’ve been using WordPress for a number of years now. What started as hobby has turned into a business, as Kernel Creative Media uses WordPress for the majority of our projects. Seeing as I’m constantly writing PHP, CSS and JavaScript to extend and customize the content management system, I figured it’s about time I start giving back. Yesterday, I decided that I would begin contributing to WordPress core. What all does that mean? A lot, actually.

I’m Addicted to Mortal Kombat – My Favorite Fighting Game Ever

Since Loot Ninja is no longer operating, I’ve had a chance to go back and play games that eluded me for quite some time. I finally finished Uncharted 2, and while I still want to play Red Dead Redemption and go through Mass Effect 2 on PS3 to get my game save how I’d like going in to Mass Effect 3, I’ve shelved those for a bit and have spent most of my gaming time with Mortal Kombat. I reviewed the game for Loot Ninja (link will only be active through July 31, 2011), but being as I needed to move forward with other titles, I didn’t have as much chance as I would have liked at the time to dig deep into the game. Over the long July 4th weekend, I put in quite a few hours with the game. I’m hooked.

Please Excuse the Mess – Working on a New WordPress Theme

Elephant Poo

You may have noticed that the site looks quite a bit different… and rather bland. I’m in the process of totally revamping my personal site here with a new WordPress theme, so bear with me.

It’s been a rough day. If you didn’t hear, today we shut down Loot Ninja, my now former video game news, editorial and review website. It’s been my baby for almost six years, but it’s time to say goodbye.

With Loot Ninja gone, I’ll be writing more here – something I’ve been meaning to do for quite a long time. Now I’ll have time to write about things outside of video gaming (and some games too, for sure). Stay tuned!

And if you have any suggestions for things for this site, by all means let me know. I’m using WooThemes wonderful Canvas theme as the basis for my new WordPress theme. They have an amazing framework to build from, so this should be fun :)

I Love my iPad, but it’s Incomplete

I picked up a 32GB WiFi iPad about two weeks after it was released and, while I’m generally in love, there are a few things clearly missing. One of my intentions was to cover E3 in Los Angeles this June with only the iPad, leaving my MacBook Pro at home. Sadly this won’t work out as a few key apps have not yet been updated or released.

One of the big apps I needed for this coverage is a Flickr app to upload all of my photos to post at Loot Ninja. With that not yet available, I’m stuck bringing my laptop to display all of my imagery. Sure, the iPhone app will run on the iPad, but it’s overly cumbersome and doesn’t offer much in the way to grabbing images to put into WordPress. To the same extent, the WordPress app for iPad is a buggy mess – crashing at will if you so much as think about another platform. Since those are key elements to covering these events, I have little choice than to pack my laptop for the trip.

I have a lot of faith in the development community that all the apps will come and/or get updated in fair amount of time. But for now, the iPad won’t serve the purpose as a video game conference coverage beast in my travel bag. I’ll still it use as an eBook reader, movie viewer, internet browser and game player, but all of my major writing and photo uploading will be relegated back to the Mac. One day… one day.

Connecting iPhone to Multiple Computers – Need Help

I’m looking for some help, friends. I’ve found numerous articles online for connecting an iPhone/iPod to multiple computers, but nothing I’ve found has really addressed what I’m trying to accomplish. So here the skinny…

My iPhone syncs to my MacBook Pro at home automatically when I plug it in. I do not want that to change. What I’m trying to accomplish is plugging my iPhone into my work PC and NOT having it sync automatically so I can listen to music/podcasts on my iPhone at work through my computer speakers. I want to retain the automatic syncing on my MacBook Pro at home.

The only thing I’ve found is turning off automatic syncing altogether for the device, which applies to all computers when you make that setting in iTunes. I also don’t want to accidentally sync with my work computer and lose all my data during the day.

Any ideas?

WiredTree: A Great Web Host

I’m in the process of moving a few things to a new web host and chose WiredTree based on a number of factors (reliability, support, hardware, price, etc). One of the facets of their service they talk up is 15 minutes response time for support tickets. While you might think this is a joke, it’s not at all. In both sales and support inquiries, I’ve gotten responses within 10 minutes each time, and not just “we’ll look into it,” but actual results. This is amazing.

The service I chose was their Managed Hybrid VPS, which gives plenty of hardware for all the sites I have, especially Loot Ninja, which gets a solid amount of traffic. I’m still in the setup phase, but this site is now running on the new server.

If you’re looking for a VPS, take a serious look at WiredTree. They’re right at the top of the list in my book.

Drupal vs. Joomla for Higher Education

I’m in the process of researching and recommending a new Content Management System for my new employer and wanted to get anyone’s take on the matter. We want to stay Open Source and need enough flexibility and scalability for future growth, while still being able to integrate with current IT systems. If you’re had experience with either, weigh in below in the comments.
